Design considerations

Design to communicate! People look first. They read only when you give them reason to. Design needs to be functional, not decorative. People need to be able to easily find out what they need to do in response to the document. Design is about the interactions between people and the complex patterns of written and graphic information that affect their lives: forms, instructions, webpages, books, signs, diagrams, and so on.

Consider your readers:

• What do they know?

• Why will they read?

• How will they read? For example, will they skim/scan quickly or read deliberately, deeply, and slowly, pencil in hand?

• What depth and breadth of information do they expect?

Develop visual sensibility. Consider how design:

• engenders or diminishes interest (invites or intimidates)

• enhances verbal content

• communicates ethos, logos, and pathos (credibility, authority, and emotional connections).

The three key aspects of design are:

1. the text (words and numbers)

2. the typography and layout

3. the illustrative material (graphs, tables, charts, maps, photographs, and diagrams).
